Pro nuclear experts claim Fukushima  is only 1 - 10% of Chernobyl total radiation released with at least three or more complete nuclear reactor melt downs and at least two melt outs. CAN A SPENT FUEL POOL BURN AND/OR RELEASE RADIATION INTO THE AIR?


Let's find out if it is even possible for a spent fuel pool to burn to start with, because some of these same pro nuclear apologists also like to claim it is impossible for fuel rods to burn, as they are made out of metal.

In the video above, Arnie Gunderson, a nuclear spent fuel pool expert who made his living in this arena and who is an expert on fuel rods and spent fuel pools, discusses and explores if it is possible for spent fuel pools to catch on fire.  Arnie is an expert on fuel rods, and has intimate knowledge about this, because that is what he did for many years inside the industry.

Bottom line, a spent fuel pool contains very hot spent fuel, which can and does burn, if the water is boiled away and cooling systems are lost, as was the case at Fukushima Daichi, after 3/11.

The above picture shows melted fuel rods at TMI. These rods also melted down into corium at the bottom of the reactor. How do nuclear fuel rods inside of a reactor or spent fuel pool melt down into corium?

Via gottagetoffthegrid February 25, 2012 interview with Robert Kelley, an engineer in Vienna who used to lead the Nuclear Emergency Response at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico.
"As water evaporates and exposes the fuel, the uranium in the rods can burn through a protective sheath emitting heat and radioactive cesium. After that, the uranium may mix with any remaining water to start an uncontrolled nuclear reaction that sends radiation into the atmosphere, scientists said. “Dissolving uranium in water is the way to make a certain kind of nuclear reactor,” Kelley said in an e-mailed response to questions. “In this uncontrolled situation, the ‘reactor’ will have no human control and begin fissioning.”

In other words, any nuclear reactor or attached spent fuel pool can release massive amounts of radiation without anything burning at all, just by the water level going down far enough for the fuel rods to melt through the zirconium casing, which allows them to emit a plume of radioactive cesium and other noble gases. Then the melted uranium and/or plutonium from MOX fuel mixes with water and starts fissioning under water, releasing more radiation that way. 

SUMMARY: HOW MUCH SPENT FUEL WAS LOST AT FUKUSHIMA?

Next, is there any scientific evidence to prove that ANY spent fuel pools burned and/or released radition? The answer is yes, there is plenty of evidence, but ONLY if you go outside of TEPCO's figures and stories, which have been proven to be highly unreliable and subject to severe changes, numerous times. TEPCO seems to have a special way of measuring and reporting things, and then changing all of their figures later on down the road, due to 'mistakes'. The official numbers do not include any radiation coming from ANY spent fuel pools where they assume that all spent fuel pools are intact and never suffered any damage, explosions, melt downs or melt outs. 

"All Cs-136 measurements besides Tepco’s indicate a significant cesium release from the spent fuel pools. Since the assumptions were conservative, a range of 33%-60% of the cesium was observed to come from the pools, depending on the location of measurement."

Is there any other proof that the spent fuel pools caught on fire? Yes, the NRC was communicating with people on site at Fukushima during the disaster and this is the summarized transcript that was obtained via FOIA process by Hatrickpenry; 

3/18/11: "The source term provided to NARAC was: 

(1) 25% of the total fuel in unit 2 (SFP) released to the atmosphere, 

(2) 50% of the total spent fuel from unit 3 (SFP) was released to the atmosphere, and 

(3) 100% of the total spent fuel was released to the atmosphere from unit 4 (SFP)." 

The amounts estimated to have burned in each spent fuel pool may be wrong, but that does not matter much. What has been documented so far via two different credible sources, is that multiple spent fuel pools BURNED and melted down.

Now let's go into each spent fuel pool and see what evidence there is of a fire and/or explosion at each building. Remember that there are at least two pools in each building, and both can and do contain spent fuel rods; the equipment pool, and the spent fuel pool. As you will see, this is a very important detail, because either or both can catch on fire and/or melt out.

Bottom line, there can be THREE fires, explosions and/or a melt outs at each building, because each building has both an equipment pool and a spent fuel pool, in addition to the nuclear reactor.

....explosions and fires have occurred at spent fuel pools two and four over the past four days and now radiation levels are spiking enormously. In plant #2 over 30,000 spent fuel rods are now exposed, and in the #4 plant, the workers have evacuated. There is now mass panic at all airports, shopping centers to stock up on food, We are being told to stay indoors,,schools are being instructed to keep the students inside. I'll keep you up-dated through-out the day. This is an historical event underway as we speak.

TEPCO denies any explosions or fires happened at building #2 and they claim nothing happened at the spent fuel pool in building #2, despite this building being the WORST as far as radiation release during the accident. They have no explanation for this radiation release, and just shrug their shoulders when asked to explain it. Of course, they have to stick with this story to make the 10% of Chernobyl fairy tale work at all.

3/18/11: "The source term provided to NARAC was: 

(2) 50% of the total spent fuel from unit 3 (SFP) was released to the atmosphere, and 
Fukushima reactor #3 and #4 were burning and loaded with MOX plutonium fuel. Building #3 exploded and released most of it's contents to the air and surrounding 2 to 3 miles of countryside in the form of fuel fragments, much like Chernobyl did.

Because there is no independent nuclear regulator that does REAL post accident analysis, one has to guess whether these two explosions were from the reactor, the spent fuel pool or the equipment pool.

Some pro nuclear apologists like to claim that there was no MOX fuel at Fukushima anywhere.

The Fukushima explosion at #3 all by itself is much worse than Chernobyl for 2 reasons. First, #3 contained 'old' fuel, which is much more radioactive than fresh uranium coming direct from a processing facility where they make these fuel rods. 

Chernobyl had fresh new fuel loaded inside of it. Chernobyl had no MOX fuel, and thus no plutonium to speak of. Unit #3 was stuffed with MOX plutonium containing fuel, and the fuel rods were 'old', which makes the #3 explosion orders of magnitude more dangerous, toxic and radioactive all by itself when compared to Chernbyl. Then we have to add all of the other reactors and spent fuel pool leaks, fires and explosions and add all of those to #3.

BUILDING #3 EXPLOSION BLEW OUT  600 To 6,000 POUNDS OF PLUTONIUM, WAS IT THE REACTOR, SPENT FUEL POOL, OR BOTH?

Building #3 combined with the plutonium coming from other reactors and SFP's, blew out between 600-6000 pounds of plutonium (possibly MUCH more) into the air, which then went all around the world. Some people say plutonium is too heavy to do that. Unit #3, or whatever is left of it, is still steaming and releasing whatever was inside of it to the air, even today..

"The debris tracks on the #3 building turbine bld roof clearly show two explosions.  The first explosion was on 3/14 at 11:01, and there was a second explosion at R3 on 3/15 at 11:00. News reports also prove that there were two separate explosions on two separate days.

SPENT FUEL POOL #4 BURNED MULTIPLE TIMES, EQUIPMENT POOL BURNED, MELTED OUT EVIDENCE AND DATA

Nuclear expert provides excellent analysis of how melt out happened at building 4. He talks about 9 hour fire and heat signature from building 4, and IMPLODED side of building, that collapsed INTO the building, from this massive fire in the spent fuel pool. Evidence of melt out shown, heat signatures still showing up on April 16, 2011. #4 Spent fuel pool has black soot from fire, above 'refilled' spent fuel pool water line, more evidence of 9 hour fire. Core of open reactor also shows heat signature, which indicates either fuel inside reactor, or melted fuel coming in from one of two fuel pools connected to it. GOLD colored 'fresh' corium at Chernobyl is shown. Today the corium at Chernobyl is BLACK, just the same as at Fukushima. The undisputable evidence above shows melted fuel inside both the spent fuel pool, the equipment pool, and the reactor.  A huge explosion happened at building #4, a huge fire raged for many hours, and a huge amount of what looked like corium oozed out of the side of the building, with a color that changed from gold to black. Each spent fuel pool contains many times more fuel than any reactor does, because that is the only place where this highly radioactive garbage can be stored for now. Never before have multiple spent fuel pools burned. Never before has a spent fuel pool melted out completely as it did at Fukushima Daichi.

BUILDING FOUR EXPERIENCED NUMEROUS FIRES AND EXPLOSIONS


Not only did building #4 have numerous fires, it also had numerous explosions....
via anne October 21, 2013 On 8/30/2013, The Japanese Nuclear Regulation Authority released their report about reactor4 investigation conducted from this July to August. “In this report, they concluded reactor4 experienced at least 2 strong explosions in 311. “According to their report, the ceiling and floor of S-W part of the 4th floor had a severe damage. Also, the floor of N-W part of the 3rd floor had a serious damage. The investigating team assumed there were 2 major explosion around these areas. “In addition to it, the 5th floor lost the walls on theS, E and W and the roof. There might have been another explosion there according to their report….”

As these spent fuel pools burned and/or exploded after the earthquake and tsunami hit and destroyed the Fukushima nuclear power plant complex, the solid, highly radioactive fuel (trash) vaporized into gas and smoke (nano particles) which was then blown downwind. 

Each spent fuel pool contained between 100 to 1,000 TONS of plutonium. How much of this plutonium was released in total? TEPCO won't even admit that ANY plutonium was on site, much less that any was released, so good luck getting this information from them. The IAEA is just a marketing arm of the nuclear industry, funded by them, so good luck with getting anything from them either. They have zero interest in reporting on anything negative. Their job seems to be to provide a good report that minimizes everything and tell the world that TEPCO is doing a 'good job', while encouraging TEPCO to dump the contents of all of those tanks into the Pacific.  

Remember that there can be THREE fires, explosions and/or a melt outs at each building, because each building has both an equipment pool and a spent fuel pool, in addition to the nuclear reactor.

SPENT FUEL POOLS # 5 and 6

Due to the massive coverup and denial of anything bad happening at Fukushima and the completely ridiculous fairy tale about what happened by TEPCO that it was only 10% of Chernobyl, attention needs to be placed on what REALLY happened at the spent fuel pools in buildings #5 and #6. There is evidence of a meltdown situation happening in those buildings as well, documented at the following link..

Because there is no independent investigator of accidents, it is only possible to guess at what happened inside the reactors and spent fuel pools of these buildings, but based on the limited information, it is possible to surmise that something in at least one, possibly both of these buildings also had something melt down, either in the reactors and/or possibly in the spent fuel pools. Because of the massive coverup by TEPCO and the nuclear industry, we may never know.

COMMON SPENT FUEL POOL

What are the odds that this spent fuel pool escaped this mega nuclear disaster without any damage, fire or melt down? 

A lot depends on how 'old' the spent fuel was inside the pool. Spent fuel cools off as it ages inside of a spent fuel pool. It could be that if only 5 year old spent fuel (or older) was put into the common spent fuel pool, that it did not boil off the water, because the spent fuel pool rods were old and cooled off enough that this spent fuel pool survived with just passive cooling of the water inside of it sitting there.

The common fuel pool building looks like it got hot. Remember, building 2 looks fine from the outside, but the reactor inside melted down completely. 

Most spent fuel pools need ACTIVE cooling and chemicals to keep them from melting down and forming corium. This is why the Carrington Event is such a huge threat to all nuclear plants globally. 

PLUTONIUM RELEASED AFTER 3/11 MEGA NUCLEAR DISASTER WENT AROUND THE WORLD

In the material above, documentation was provided, proving that MOX fuel was being used at Fukushima in multiple reactors and that it was also in the spent fuel pools. Since those same reactors and fuel pools burned, exploded and melted down, plutonium was released. The only question is; how much plutonium was released?

Plutonium was measured in plants and animals in Alaska by a Dept. Of Energy study in 2013, and it was found in air filters in Lithuania, 8000 miles away. 

There have been multiple confirmations that radiation from Fukushima traveled all around the world..

Plutonium nano sized hot particles from Fukushima went all the way around the world, multiple times. The only question left is how much, and how much was breathed in by everyone on the planet.

ARNIE GUNDERSON SAYS THE AVERAGE CITIZEN IN JAPAN BREATHED IN ABOUT 100 HOT PARTICLES PER DAY AFTER THE FUKUSHIMA MEGA NUCLEAR DISASTER, PEOPLE IN THE US BREATHED IN ABOUT 5 TO 10 PER DAY


According to Arnie Gunderson, the average Japanese citizen breathed in about 100 'hot' particles per day from Fukushima after the mega disaster. People in the US breathed in about 5 to 10 hot particles per day in the same period, but a few days after 3/11. The jet stream brought over the noble radioactive gases such as Xenon, Krypton, and nano hot particles such as plutonium, uranium, and cesium inside of buckyballs. 

14,000 ADDITIONAL DEATHS IN THE US IN JUST A FEW MONTHS AFTER FUKUSHIMA


The immediate effect from Fukushima was an increased number of infant deaths, which took the form of an increase in the number of child deaths during childbirth. This happened all around the world, as newborns and fetuses are up to 2,000 to 2 million times more sensitive to radiation than healthy adults, depending on which source of information you use and what age the fertilized egg or fetus is.

INFANT DEATHS INCREASED RADICALLY IN US IMMEDIATELY AFTER 3/11, FUKUSHIMA RADIATION FOUND IN US MILK


Up to a third of newborns in the US had thyroid problems at birth, thanks to Fukushima radioactive Iodine gas that traveled all around the world. The infant mortality or death rate at childbirth went up 20-30% in the days and months after the mega disaster, not just in the US, but all around the world.

Fukushima and the nuclear industry are responsible for the deaths of many hundreds of thousands of infants and fetuses all around the world, because in the above video, we are only counting one small area of increased deaths of infants; newborns. Death rates of infants during childbirth right after Fukushima went up all around the world... Count that up and calculate how many murders that totals.

Of course, the pro nuclear apologists claim that no one died, and no one will ever die due to Fukushima.

Plutonium is so deadly, that just one pound distributed equally in the air all around the world, can theoretically kill everyone, according to Helen Caldicott MD. Fukushima released TONS of plutonium into the air, if we add up what came out of #3, and then add in what came out of all of the spent fuel pools which contained MUCH more plutonium than any given reactor did.  What effect will this have on the living web of life?

THERE HAVE BEEN 40 TO 60 MILLION DEATHS DUE TO 2,400 GLOBAL OPEN AIR NUCLEAR TESTS, HOW MANY WILL DIE DUE TO FUKUSHIMA, AFTER LATENCY PERIOD RUNS OUT?


How many deaths will the nuclear industry be responsible for, as plutonium was breathed in by billions of people, initiating whatever disease, genetic mutation or cancer down the road? The answer is blowing in the wind, and we will find out, as the incubation period runs its course and the plutonium initiates and develops whatever it does. But do not be surprised if healthy, non smoking, non drinking people all around you start developing health issues and cancers all over the world in the next ten years or so.

EXTREME DANGERS OF US SPENT FUEL POOLS EXPLORED


The experts above discuss the various dangers posed by spent fuel pools even if nothing happens to them, and there is no nuclear accident. If you have the time, it is worth listening to and watching. 

Bottom line, even if the numbers of how much spent fuel was burned out of the various spent fuel pools at Fukushima are off, (#4 figures may be inaccurate) the fact that some plutonium was released by multiple Fukushima reactors plus multiple spent fuel pools,  should spell the END of nuclear power globally, right NOW.

There is no excuse for Fukushima causing the deaths of millions, and potentially billions of people.... NONE. We could call what they are doing global genocide and be perfectly justified, wouldn't you agree? 

Nuclear power should be labeled a crime against humanity by the UN. Just like the Nazis and their genocide of Jews, there should be convictions of those responsible for building, designing and allowing plutonium to be used in any nuclear reactor. Sadly, the future plans for all nuclear reactors include using pure plutonium as fuel, rather than uranium. 

Remember that plutonium is up to 2 million times more dangerous, toxic and deadly than other radioactive elements that humans are used to. Why? Plutonium is a man made radioactive element and it mimics iron in the body. Much like the American Indians, humans have no defense or immune system 'memory' against plutonium. The result may very well be that just like the Indians who were wiped out by diseases brought in by the settlers, humanity will see the same thing happen on a global scale, just due to the plutonium released by Fukushima..
