WHAT ARE HOT PARTICLES? 


Hot particles are another hazard created by nuclear spills, accidents and disasters, such as Chernobyl, TMI, Santa Susana and Fukushima, just to name a few of the thousands of nuclear disasters, open air tests and accidents that have happened since the beginning of the atomic age. 

Arnie Gunderson teaches the public what radioactive fuel fleas are on his website. These fleas are also called hot particles. They are made up of things like uranium, plutonium, strontium, cesium, radium, etc. Arnie was interviewed on CNN and says basically the same thing he says on his own Fairewinds.com website video.

All of these  hot particles are nano particle sized, and deadly dangerous. Any person on Earth breathing in just ONE fuel flea/hot particle can be killed by that particle via cancer or other disease that it can cause, if it is inhaled or ingested and then sticks or is absorbed by the body. Any one hot particle can kill anyone breathing one in, anywhere on the globe, particularly if it is plutonium, which is much more hazardous than other radioactive elements.

Three years ago, Fairewinds was one of the first organizations to talk about the "hot particles" that are scattered all over Japan and North America's west coast. Hot particles are dangerous and difficult to detect. In this video Mr. Kaltofen discusses the hottest hot particle he has ever found, and it was discovered more than 300 miles from the Fukushima Daiichi site. Hot particles continue to be found very far away from Fukushima. In the following case, the hot particle sample that Marco Kaltofen, Civil Engineer Ph.D. Candidate at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) got, came from Nagoya in Japan, which is 460 kilometers from the Fukushima mega nuclear disaster site.

According to Utsunomiya, high temperatures inside the malfunctioning reactors at the Fukushima plant melted and broke down the concrete and metal in the buildings. Silica, zinc, iron, oxygen and cesium-137 fused into millimeter-wide glass microparticles, each about the size of a pin’s head. Lifted into the atmosphere by the fires raging at the plant, they then blew about 240 kilometers southeast to Tokyo.

By comparison, hot particles like this only went out about 30 km from Chernobyl, so Fukushima is orders of magnitude worse, because those hot particles travled 240 km to Tokyo and beyond. 

STORY OF ONE HOT PARTICLE FOUND INSIDE A HOME IN JAPAN, 500 KM AWAY FROM FUKUSHIMA


The most interesting part of this story is that this hot particle was found inside a home, in a vacuum cleaner bag. But it will stay north of the equator for anyone who has a Leer jet and can get out. But I guess what I am advising at that point is keep your windows closed. I would definitely wear some sort of a filter if I was outside. I certainly wouldn’t run and exercise until I was sure the plume had dissipated. This isn’t now. This is, as you were saying, this is worst case. If Unit Four were to topple, I would close my windows, turn the air conditioner on, replace the filters frequently, damp mop, put a HEPA filter in the house and try to avoid as much of the hot particles as possible. You are not going to walk out with a Geiger counter and be in a plume that is going to tell you the meter. The issue will be on the West Coast, hot particles. And the solution there is HEPA filters and avoiding them.’…”

HOW DOES ONE MEASURE A HOT PARTICLE?


How does one detect a hot particle? Since they float around in the air, it is not going to be measured unless it lands on the Geiger counter detector head, or is in VERY close proximity to it. Geiger counter radiation meters can usually detect diffuse large areas of alpha, beta and gamma radiation, or plumes of radiation in the air, unless the detector is built into a case or it is covered with shields. If your radiation meter all of a sudden goes crazy, and then goes back to normal a minute or so later, it probably measured a hot particle going by in the form of a dust mote. Or the dust mote landed on the detector, and then got dislodged and floated away again. Some detectors are much more sensitive than others, so the cheaper detectors may not register a hot particle at all. 

The more expensive the meter, the more options usually exist, and the more sensitive they are and the better a chance there is of detecting a hot particle. A pancake style of radiation detector is one type of detector that will more of a chance of measuring a hot particle, which is a very tiny dust mote of radiation that is so small, it acts more like easy to move and disturb dust, rather than a solid, heavy, hard to move metal. You cannot even see a 'hot' particle, it is so small. 

Geiger Counters do not tell the whole story and they measure only a small percentage of the actual heavy metal radioactive poison out there, while not telling you about hot particles at all. Just because you are measuring 'safe' background radiation in the US, Australia, or somewhere else, does not mean you are safe any possible radiation dangers, in the form of hot particles or hot radioactive gases such as Iodine, Xenon or Kryton for example. Geiger Counters are 'calibrated' to detect one particular isotope more than all others, and they are better at detecting either alpha, beta, or gamma radiation, depending on how they are set up. No Geiger Counter will detect neutron radiation, which is the most deadly of all radiations coming out of nuclear bombs and nuclear accidents.

HOW DANGEROUS ARE HOT PARTICLES? 


The nuclear industry tries to keep the secret about dangers of hot particles by deceiving people:

“An early example of our profession’s prostitution occurred with the ‘hot particle problem’ (HPP), which arose during the first five years of operations at the Hanford plutonium-producing facility (1944-49). Small radioactive particles released into the environment caused a substantial health risk to the surrounding population.

Since the dose from a small, radioactively contaminated dust particle varies inversely as the square of the distance from the particle, simple calculation indicates that extremely high local tissue doses of thousands of roentgens will be received by the lung cells close to one of these small particles. Such large doses not only kill most of the cells close to one of these small particles but also cause surviving cells farther away to change into primordial cancer cells, the precursors of malignant tumors.

These hot particles contained a mixture of radionuclides, such as Sr-90, Cs-134, Cs-137, Ru-106, and I-131, and undoubtedly some of the particles contained plutonium. Apparently no one conducted Pu-239 measurement at Hanford, but alpha measurements made elsewhere indicated large amounts of Pu-239, U-238, and U-235 on some of those particles. These hot particles can lodge in the lungs, intestines or bone. They can lodge in the tissues and will not show up on X rays at the hospital.

These hot nano sized particles CANNOT be measured by the average cheap Geiger Counters because they are too small and they are in too low a concentration. However, if a very hot gamma ray emitting particle lodges in the lungs, a very sensitive pancake style radiation detector may pick that up. Alpha ray emitting particles cannot be detected using this method, because that radiation is blocked by a couple of cell layers.

HOT PARTICLES CAN CAUSE CANCER OR OTHER HEALTH ISSUES


But as the video above shows, a hot particle can cause lung cancer, or any other kind of cancer, depending on where the radioactive particle lodges in the body.

So where do these hot particles go once they come out of a nuclear accident site like Fukushima, Chernobyl, TMI, WIPP, Santa Susana or etc? Hot particles float downwind of any accident site and may even ride the jet stream around the world.

Japanese authorities claim that Fukushima is in cold shutdown, but that is NOT the case. Fukushima continues to 'leak' fuel fleas or hot particles every day, 24 hours a day, and will continue to do so, for years. The reactors are open to the air, and so are the coriums that melted out of them. Yes, the amount of radiation and hot particles might be less now than at the peak of the nuclear disaster, but they are still coming out.

Why do you think everyone on the Fukushima site is wearing a very expensive full facemask, air filtering system, and Tyvek suit, including the press and the IAEA inspectors? You don't do that at a 'normal' cold shutdown nuclear power plant. You would only do this in an emergency situation where there are lots and lots of hot particles floating around, due to open fission and criticalities still happening.

Of course, this means that hot particles and radioactive gases are being released, especially with these huge spikes in radiation being measured.

WHAT EFFECT WILL FUKUSHIMA RADIATION HAVE ON POPULATIONS IN JAPAN?


So what effect will this low level radiation leaking into the environment have on a global population, including children and fetuses? Here are some articles and videos that explain the problem, from a historical perspective.

These unregulated releases include the noble gases krypton, xenon and argon, which are fat-soluble and if inhaled by persons living near a nuclear reactor, are absorbed through the lungs, migrating to the fatty tissues of the body, including the abdominal fat pad and upper thighs, near the reproductive organs. These radioactive elements, which emit high-energy gamma radiation, can mutate the genes in the eggs and sperm inducing genetic disease. Tritium, a radioactive isotope of hydrogen, is another biologically significant gas, routinely emitted from nuclear reactors. Tritium combines with oxygen creating "tritiated" water."

Of course, the pro nuclear apologists that try to protect the nuclear industry from these truths will deny any of the above and accuse anyone exposing them of being a fearmonger, a quack, or a conspiracy theorist, because if they do admit to ANY of the above truths, the whole nuclear industry would quickly be shut down and abolished world wide, once people understand the dangers of even ONE hot particle being inhaled by a beloved family child, grandparent or parent. 

So really the only question in front of us, is how quickly the truth of the matter will be spread around so that it becomes common knowledge, and when will the nuclear anti life forces by caged and shut down forever?

Even if the risk of inhaling a hot particle today in the US is low, do you really want to accept any of that risk for your children, or grandchildren, especially when you don't have to take that risk with 100% renewable, clean, green and safe energy sources such as wind, water, tides, geothermal and hydrogen power?
